The founder of the city is Antiochus II of Syria. Laodicea is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Laodicea was a center of commerce, sports and the arts. 13 km from Pamukkale are the ruins of Laodicea. The columns of the famous temple of Apollo remained in the city.
